China's New Generation of "Artificial Sun" Achieves Another Breakthrough in Scientific Research

In the afternoon of October 19, the scientific research team of CNNC passed on the good results again. The scientific research of China's new generation of "artificial sun" (HL-2M) made breakthrough progress, and the plasma current of HL-2M exceeded 1 million amperes, creating a new record for the operation of controllable nuclear fusion devices in China. This marks that China's nuclear fusion research and development has taken an important step forward from fusion ignition, and has become the first in the world, with the highest technical level in the world.

According to CNNC, the plasma current intensity is the core parameter of the Tokamak nuclear fusion device. The plasma current reaching 1 million amperes (1 megaampere) is a necessary condition for its realization of fusion energy. In the future, the Tokamak fusion reactor must operate stably under megaampere current.

The plasma current capacity of the new generation of "artificial sun" can reach more than 2.5 megaamperes, and the current operation has exceeded 1 megaampere, creating a new record for the operation of controllable nuclear fusion devices in China. This new breakthrough means that the device can be routinely operated at a plasma current of more than 1 megaampere in the future. It is of great significance for China to participate in the international thermonuclear fusion reactor (ITER) experiment and independently design and operate the fusion reactor in the future.

On December 4, 2020, the new generation of "artificial sun" independently designed and built by the Southwest Institute of Physics of Nuclear Industry of CNNC Corporation was completed and achieved its first discharge, which was rated as "China's top ten scientific and technological progress news" by academicians of the two academies.
